As an illustration, here is a simple sentence written for input to PerScribe.
This sentence could be typed in Word in any of the following ways:
- Full form : in jomle ye farsi be latin neve$te $ode @st
Probably the easiest to read and edit. The dollar sign $ is a modified S for Shin ش; and the vowel sound in @ ("at") is similar to the short "a" sound
فتحه
?
in Persian.
- Quick form : in jomle ye farsi be latin nevewte wode [st
It can become tiresome to keep using the Shift key to type $ for Shin and @ for short "a". For this reason the program also accepts w (above S on the international keyboard) for Shin and [ for the short A. (Since the Persian script in any case ignores the short vowels, you can miss it out altogether if you prefer.) On conversion PerScribe replaces all "w"s with "$" and "["s with "@" in the Latin text.
- Abbreviated form : in jomle ye farsi be latin nevewtWE
This illustrates some of the advanced features of PerScribe that are designed to make input easier. Since w is used for the letter Shin, it seems natural to use W as an abbreviation for the common verb Shod[eh] شده ; and E is easy to remember as an abbreviation for Ast است. These shortened forms in the Latin text are automatically expanded to Full form when you convert your text to Persian, making for easier reading and editing.
- Terse form 1 : in jmle farsi be latin nv$te $de @st
- Terse form 2 : in jmlh farsi bh latin nv$th $dh @st
You would also type these keys in Direct Persian input.
This is the Persian output:
.اين جملهی فارسی به لاتين نوشته شده است
Remember that the Latin version is not a strictly phonetic transcription of the Persian sounds, such as is aimed at in the Eurofarsi system. It is a transliteration devised to achieve the correct Persian spelling (with four forms of Z ز ذ ض ظ, three of S س ص ث , etc). So, for example, the Persian for "tape recorder" (ضبط صوت) must be typed as follows: Z@bT e Sout (Terse form: ZbT Sut).
Backslashes (\) are used to indicate certain other special spellings: eg H@ta\ and m@s\@lan\ (Quick form: m[s\[lan\) for حتی and ً مثلا. (Note also the use of s\ for ث.)
