To try out this remapping approach, simply click on the appropriate version for the keyboard layout you are using. (Please make sure that you choose US or UK as appropriate.)

Browser test Before downloading any files, check that your browser can display Persian properly. Can you see زبان فارسی z@ban e farsi on your screen? This should work with Internet Explorer 5 and higher—and also with Netscape Navigator 6.

The installation procedure assigns the new Persian/Farsi Unicode layout to the Faeroese keyboard (taskbar abbreviation: Fo). [Apologies to any Faeroese speakers reading this page.] You can then switch between English and Persian in the normal Windows manner (usually by pressing Alt-Shift).

Each .zip file contains the following files:

  • detailed instructions ("Read_me" file)
  • registry update file
  • keyboard (.kbd) file
  • transliteration table showing which keys to type for each Persian letter
  • sample HTML practice file
  • uninstallation file
To download (7 KB!), please select the version corresponding to your keyboard: Please let us know if you want to type Persian on a non-English (eg French or German) keyboard. The Persian layout could also be adapted to make it more phonetically accurate for Arabic (for example you might prefer to use W for Waw).
