Keyboard details

Since Unicode UTF-8 encoding codes each IPA symbol as two characters (bytes), you will have to type two keys for each letter, but this is simple and—in most cases—intuitive. For example, to type ˈsÊŒmθɪŋ you would press the following keys:

`"s^vVm^tT^iI^nN

The caret sign ( ^ ) indicates that the AltGr key is held down while the following letter is typed. The code used follows the SAMPA guidelines for typing IPA using ASCII, each uppercase letter being preceded by AltGr + the same letter. So for the th sound in something you would type AltGr-t then Shift-T.

(If you cannot see the IPA symbols properly displayed, you will need to download a suitable font.)

What you will see on the screen as you type is a string of symbols, a number of which will not even display properly:

ˈsʌmθɪŋ

Nevertheless these will produce the desired result: what matters is not the source code but what the browser does with it!
