HunQuick Hungarian typing

Typing the Hungarian alphabet is easy with HunQuick.

HunQuick is an add-in for Microsoft® Word (Word 2003 and higher) for rapid typing of Hungarian text on a QWERTY keyboard. This system lets you choose between a new, simple approach and an improved version of the traditional Hungarian HU keyboard, using intuitive or "spare" keys not used in Hungarian. If you use the simpler method, HunQuick allows you to type accents with the minimum of effort—in fact the only effort you will ever need to apply is lifting your finger!

  • To type o ...... press the O key
  • To type ó ...... press the O key
  • To type ö ...... press the O key
  • To type ő ...... press the O key
How does it work?
As you hold down any key you will see the various possible accents for that letter appear in turn. This also applies to digraphs (two letters combined for one sound, as in gy and zs) and the trigraph dzs.    Demo

When the correct symbol appears, just lift your finger from the key: it really is as simple as that. If you "overshoot" the correct symbol, keep your finger down as the symbols continue to cycle until the correct one reappears.

Examples
Take the name György. Using HunQuick this would be typed:

G..o...rg..

The dots simply show that you need to hold down the G and O keys a little longer than usual to generate the digraph gy and the accented ö.

Or take the word asszony, which is typed:

as...on..

Note that in this case the S key is held down a little longer to generate the doubled digraph ssz.

Audio clues
If you prefer touch-typing, an optional beep will sound each time the accent or letter on the screen changes. Lift your finger as soon as you hear the beep for the one you want. Use this option once you are familiar with the program to avoid constant peering at the screen.

Colours
If you prefer watching the screen as you type, this option makes it much easier to identify the accents visually. The letter you are typing will be highlighted, changing colour for each accent: for example ú, ü,ű, etc.

Direct typing of accents
The simpler HunQuick method we've described is straightforward: there's nothing to memorize. However, it can be rather slow if you're a good typist. For that reason the program includes an alternative way of typing the accented letters directly, usually with a key immediately above the plain (unaccented) letter. Three letters use the X, Q and W keys (which are not required for Hungarian). To type á, simply press the Q key (above A on the QWERTY keyboard); for é press the W key (next to the E key). The accented versions of the letters O (ó, ö and ő) and U (ú, ü and ű) are typed using the numeric keys above O and U. To type í press X: just remember that the Roman numeral X represents ten (tíz in Hungarian).

If you prefer, you can of course type these accented letters in the usual way, by holding down the A, E, O, etc keys until the required accent appears.

Dropdown menus
Simply click on the appropriate button on the toolbar at the top of the screen. A dropdown list will appear, on which you can click on the required accented letter or digraph. Next to the letter on the menu you will see a reminder of the correct key to type next time you need this letter.

Quotation marks Authentic Hungarian quotation marks („idézőjel”) can be typed by holding down the double-quote key (") longer than normal for the opening mark, and slightly longer still for the closing mark.
