Typing
Simply type or paste in your text, using GR (Gwoyeu Romatzyh / Guóyǔ Luómǎzì ) transliteration, in the pale blue box in the lower window. For example, type in Ta sh Beeijing ren.

You can mix Chinese and English text—but Chinese within an English sentence will be converted only if it is in quotes: eg This is known as "guanshi".

Converting to Pinyin
To convert your text to Pinyin click on one of the following buttons:

  • Tone marks button: you will see the Pinyin text with tone diacritics (Tā shi Běijīng rén ) in the upper window.

  • Tone no's button: you will see the Pinyin text with syllable-final numbers (Ta1 shi Bei3jing1 ren2) in the upper window.

  • Annotate button: you will see the original GR text repeated in the upper window, but with popup Pinyin equivalents (hover the mouse cursor over each word: Ta sh Beeijing ren).

    English text is not converted/annotated.

Editing
Edit your text in the normal way in the lower window, then click again to convert.

Saving HTML code
Click on the aqua HTML code button. This will display the code in the lower window.

Finally:

  1. Select and copy this code (Ctrl-AC)
  2. Open Notepad
  3. Paste the code into it (Ctrl-V)
  4. Save as an .htm file
Your Pinyin text can now be displayed in a browser such as Internet Explorer 5.

Direct save using Word
You should be able to paste the Pinyin text directly into Word: you can then save it in either .doc or .htm format.

If you you have selected tone marks and saved the text as an .htm file, the advantage of this method is that you can specify the encoding as UTF-8, which is more compact than Unicode numerical "entities" (the encoded Pinyin will shrink to about half its length). You can experiment by trying the following procedure:

  1. Highlight the Pinyin text in the upper window (Ctrl-AC)
  2. Open Word
  3. Paste the text (Ctrl-V).
  4. Save as HTML
  5. Select UTF-8 encoding:
    • Word 97: File | Properties
    • Word 2000: Tools | Options | General | Web Options | Encoding
  6. View the file in your browser.
